Summer Learning Journey: Wk #2 - Day #3 - The Great Depression (The 1930s)

Hellloooo, there my good old friends or should I say my Bloggers!, Let's see what we're up to today, oh yes that's right's blogging again. Hmmm, let's see what activity Miss Leilani is up to today...

Activity #1
*Dealing with Stress

In New Zealand, many people lost their jobs during this decade. Experts predict that as much as 30% of the population was unemployed. It was a very stressful time for families.

Sadly, many of us still experience stress in our lives to this day. When I feel stressed I try to go for a walk or pop into my local gym for a quick workout. Rachel does exercise it makes her feel better.

And guess what, EVEN KIDS CAN GET STRESS!. Not only Adults but Children to whether they can do it, or they're trying to do but never works or even when they're way behind  and they need to catch up with study, I think that's quite common in college and High Schools

I think we need a pep-talk on how to get rid of stress or some tips to relax here are some of my things that I would do when I am stressed out is

• Go down to the Basin for a Run
• Listen to some BlueStone Alley my fav piano music EVER!
• Talk to my kittens outside, while they curl up next to me haha.
• Eat ALL I want ( But not too much )

Activity #2
*Offering A Helping Hand

During this period, people struggled to find work both here at home and overseas. It was a really tough time for people living in the Great Plains of the United States because they were hit with a huge drought that lasted for most of the decade. Many crops were damaged and farmers were not able to make enough money to feed their families.

I wish I went back all the way to the 1930s and help those families who were struggling, Humm, let me think, Yep, Fundraising that's it. I'll use fundraising to help raise money, here are 3 fundraising ideas I listed:

1. Brownie Sale: They are the best, reason why is because I know my mum's brownie its and is the best (In my opinion). I love brownie and who doesn't, it would put the brownie on 2$ for 4 large brownies you can have it S, M, Large and only 2$ for 4 brownies, now I would spend my 2$ on that!
2. Lemonade Stand: I've heard lots of people do this, its kind of cool and now that its summer ever gets a little thirst here and there. While someone jogging running or someone who's just walking need's something to drink, lemonade will just be the right thing, I would be putting the lemonade into the water bottle and we could give out some samples just in case they don't like or they do.
3. Car-wash Sale: I love cleaning the cars mostly to get wet and yeah, hahahah. I would pay 15$ for a car wash, and 2$ for a vacuum, my friends and family will pitch in to help. This will really raise some money oh what if I add the lemonade stand and the Brownie Sale, spent more that 5$ and what you buy next could be FREE!. Now that's an idea!

Bonus Activity #3

*Paying it forward

In the mid-1930s, things began to change for the better in New Zealand. More people were able to find work and receive a steady paycheck. They were still careful, however, with their money and rarely, if ever, bought treats or gifts for one another.

Rachel said that if she traveled back in the mid - 1930s she would bring blocks of Whittaker’s chocolate, bags of Jet Planes and Pineapple Lumps, healthy food snacks, clothing, and games for the children.

• Tim Tams & Crunches
• With some of my fav - Wine Gums
• And some Marsmallow
• Peanut Butter Whittaker’s chocolate + some Jaffas
• Peanut Slab + Toffee pops
• A little snack peanut mixed with raisin's, hazel, apricots because like c'mon who doesn't like apricots!

*Popular Culture - The Silent Movie

A picture in Black and White!

The 1920s saw a massive surge in the number of people going to the movies. Huge new cinemas were built in both Auckland (The Civic Theater) and Dunedin (Empire De Luxe).  The most popular type of movies showing at local NZ cinemas were ‘silent’ films. Gold Rush and The Lion's Cage are examples of iconic silent films. They feature a famous actor named Charlie Chaplin.

Have you ever heard of The Gold Rush or The Lion Cage? Charlie Chaplin was the main character in both movies. He was the main character- The Tramp in the Gold Rush. And in the Silent movie - The Lion Cage as he was chased by a deer and he went into a cage where a lion was sleeping.. there be more to tell.
----------------------------------------------------------------------- So I had to watched 2 silent movie, and write some review about weather I liked them or not, and why or why not?
--------------------------------- So the first one I watched was The Lion's Cage

Review 1#: The Lion Cage was very funny for me, because he was like panicking and running around trying to find he way out of the cage. At the end was crazy because I think this woman came and saw he was in the cage so then she unlocked when she came back with the key, and Charlie Chaplin, he was like running for the *hills (*Running as fast as he could) up to a pole and had no idea how he climbed that high,

Review #2: I like this movie, it was adventures and exciting and surprising because like, you didn't know what was coming next because it was a silent movie ( Of course ). I liked how he feel in love with a barmaid, trying valiantly to win her affections. I think this was my favourite one, I love the trailer.

Activity #2
* Art Deco

In the 1920s a new artistic movement emerged in New Zealand (and around the world). It was called ‘Art Deco.’ The picture to the right is a classic example of an ‘Art Deco’ piece. Take a close look at the painting. Do you like it?

Well, looking at the painting. This look's fantastic to be honest.

If this was a rating out of 5 star⭐ (1 star = terrible painting, 2 stars = pretty bad painting, 3 stars = okay painting, 4 stars = good painting and 5 stars = amazing painting). Also with a reason why or why not.

So the rating I would give in my opinion is 4 stars⭐. I like how its been painted, I can see those white shades that have been painted looking like the sun was reflecting on that brand new car. I also like how the lady has her hands on the wheel, it looks as if someone is siting next to her. All though I would like it if her face was happier and left the mouth side a little up to make a smile. But I like all the painting around, even the blue turquoise color paint for the car looks AMAZING!!.

Bonus Activity #3
*Crossing The Tasman

In 1928, a crew of four men flew, for the first time, across the Tasman from Australia to New Zealand. One of the men on board the Southern Cross airplane was a New Zealander named T.H. Mc Williams. His job was to operate the radio in the airplane. Unfortunately, the radio stopped working shortly after take-off and the rain and ice were so heavy that the pilot, Kingsford Smith, couldn’t see out of his front windscreen. Yikes! Fortunately, the plane made it all the way across the Tasman landing in Christchurch after a 14 hour trip.

Right now, I'm imagine that I'm in one of those plan crew's right now. I brought my diary with me when the plan, the crew and I landed. I'm going to write a poem about how I felt when I landed.

Hoping onto the plane feeling proud as ever!
Closing doors, looking into the metal pipe, seeing my reflection feeling clever.
Hearing chit chatting were ever I turn
Its getting really hot in here, I feel like I going to BURN!
I hope nothing goes wrong, where is the captain he taking so long?
Oh no!, Whats that shaking I have to know
Shaking feeling scared, did I come unprepared?
Nope I'm just being silly, No really
Well finally we have landed, we grabbed our bags and hoped out as commanded
I hope I learned a lesson from this, good thing I have my friend beside me ''Chris''

Summer Learning Journey: Wk #2 - Day #1 - The Early Years (Late 1800s – 1919)

Yes!, Hi, there bloggers a New week. Excited for more activity to discover on my blog?. Well if you are then here is my activity I did for Day #1......

Activity #1
*St Joseph Cathedral

Christ Church Cathedral

At the turn of the century, there was a great deal of construction happening in New Zealand. Many of the new British settlers wanted to build homes and community meeting places, such as churches. One of the largest buildings to be constructed during this period was St Joseph’s Cathedral in Dunedin.

St Joseph’s Cathedral is just one of the hundreds of beautiful cathedrals around the world.

I've been doing some research on some Famous Cathedral church around the world, even our country. After I found a famous cathedral, I decided to share some information about it.

So here is what I found so far:

A famous Cathedral ( I think ) I found in Christchurch, it's called: Christ Church Cathedral,

Located - Christchurch, Christchurch Central City, Cathedral Square.
Built - Between 1864 - 1904
Time it took to built - 40 Years

*The Right To Vote!

At the turn of the century, New Zealand elected its first ever government. Richard John Seddon served as the leader of the Liberal Party from 1893-1906. Prior to 1893, only men were legally allowed to vote. This all changed in the late 1800s when a woman named Kate Sheppard lead a suffragist movement in New Zealand calling for a change in the law. Her hard work finally paid off when the Electoral Act was passed into law on 19 September 1893, giving women the right to vote. New Zealand was the first country to give all women the right to vote. There were still countries in the world (e.g. Saudi Arabia) who, until recently, did not allow women to vote. Which is totally not cool!

Now these days thanks to Kate Sheppard by the way, women have the right to vote just like men. I mean come on, men are good at things, but.. so are WOMEN'S!

In fact, women's were not allowed to vote in Saudi Arabia until 2015. Do you think this is far?

Well, I think that it's not fair at all, I think women should have the right to vote. 

Women's should have the same right as men's to vote!. Women's out there have so many to say about all these demolishing new buildings, or should we stop giving free lunch at school. Thing like that, women's want to give their opinions and their suggestion maybe there opinions and things like that could be right you might not know. 

Look now, remember on voting if we want to change New Zealand flag. My mum and all my sister vote, see and because of there votes and every other women's who voted, we would have never changed the flag, instead, we stayed with our own flag. 

So I declare that women's should have, have the right to vote back then in Saudi Arabia before 2015!

* In the Flanders Fields

As the new century dawned, New Zealanders settled into a period of relative calm. The calm lasted for about 15 years but came to a sudden end in 1914 when World War I erupted in Europe. The war lasted for almost five years and claimed the lives of 18,000 New Zealanders. 

It also claimed the lives of thousands of men and women from countries around the world. Every year, we remember these brave men and women on ANZAC Day (25 April). Many people go to a special Anzac Day ceremony where they read a special poem that was written for the fallen soldiers. The poem is called ‘In Flanders Fields’ by John McCray.

So I was given a poem to read all about ANZAC Day and not that I have finished reading, I'll tell you a little bit about if I liked it, How did it make me feel.

The poem I was reading was really good, very inspiring. This poem made me feel happy, made me feel like their is hope and there always safety around the comer, all those soldiers, who risked their life for us, trying with all their might, just for this Country and all out Kiwi's and Family. There family hearts must have been in terrible pain after hearing they have passed away, must have been hard for them. But that is why we have ANZAC day to remember the people we loved, who risked everything for us, who put their life before other's, thinking of themselves before other's.
